Coral restoration across the region is active in locations such as Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and China where interventions have been a combination of government agencies, universities, and community-lead programs. Since early 2000s coral restoration efforts are growing in spatial and temporal scales and are often dominated by in-situ coral propagation and restoration programs supported by the tourism industry and conservation organizations.
In the region of the coral triangle specifically, corals and coral reefs fortunately have limited exposure, or impact, from destructive storm events however they are subject to damaging anthropogenic pressures like blast fishing, overexploitation and removal of resources, and excessive tourism. Because of the declining population, community-based coral restoration programs have become common across the region over the last 10-15 years with the region experiencing a recent expansion in number and scale of active coral restoration implementation. Increasing support and collaboration led by local and regional governments have helped restoration programs develop in the area and have led to greater coordination and shared learning opportunities to scale up efforts.
At the moment there is no CRC-specific regional group, however we do actively engage with fellow management and coordinating bodies.
