The CRC has been active throughout the region via its various coordinators, working group leads, and advisory board members that live and work in the Region. We are working closely with local agencies to support the relaunch of this group.
Corals in the region are generally considered to be exposed to some of the most extreme temperatures and salinity conditions around the world, and continue to survive, possibly making them some of the most resilient corals and coral reef communities. Given this potential, restoration efforts focus on maximizing biodiversity within restoration efforts. Since the 2000’s coral restoration efforts have focused on the development of in situ asexual propagation, with recent pushes and investment in continuing to scale-up efforts and ex situ programs. Efforts, in general, have focused on branching species but have expanded to focus on diverse morphologies as extreme bleaching episodes and damaging fishing practices continue to impact coral reefs in the region.
