Mozambique holds some of the most quietly resilient reefs in the Western Indian Ocean; and their recovery stories deserve the spotlight.

After severe bleaching events in the early 2000s and again in 2016, many southern reefs were hit hard. But in sites where local communities strengthened no-take zones, protected herbivores, and partnered with monitoring teams, something powerful began to happen: young corals started returning, crustose coralline algae spread, and reef structure slowly rebuilt itself.

It’s quiet hope, the kind that grows in protected silence, one recruit at a time.

Caribbean coral reefs are declining faster than current restoration and management approaches can keep pace, making more adaptive and coordinated interventions essential. This new policy brief synthesizes insights from the 2024 Reef Futures workshop “Co-designing a future for Caribbean reefs”, where practitioners, researchers, and managers assessed the efficacy and risks of emerging coral reef interventions and discussed what is feasible under current governance conditions.

The brief outlines four priority actions:

🌊Creating pre-approved pathways for urgent interventions
🌊Harmonizing regional governance for genetic exchange under emerging frameworks like “One Caribbean”
🌊Investing in intermediary organizations that connect science, practice, and policy
🌊Reframing risk management to support adaptive learning through carefully designed trials.

These recommendations provide a practical path for more timely, climate-resilient coral reef interventions across the Caribbean.

This August, the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) Coral Restoration Workshop took place in San José, Costa Rica 🇨🇷🌊.

The event was sponsored by the @coralrestorationconsortium and organized by the
@cimarucr at the University of Costa Rica, the @usfq, and the University of Guadalajara.

Over three days, 25+ experts from Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, and Chile, representing academic institutions, government agencies, and NGOs, gathered to strengthen the Eastern Tropical Pacific regional network and share what’s working (and what’s not) in coral restoration.

The workshop concluded with the definition of priority actions to reinforce the network. These included,

🔬Standardization of restoration and monitoring methodologies
📊Creation of a regional open-access data repository
👥 Establishment of thematic working groups
📖Development of a Regional Coral Restoration and Monitoring Manual.

When we work together across borders, we’re stronger — and so are our reefs. We are excited to see what’s next for this Regional Group!
