Say hello to Alika Garcia, a Native Hawaiian fisherman, firefighter, and conservation leader. Alika is the Executive Director of Kuleana Coral Restoration (@kuleanacoral) in Hawai’i.

Rooted in traditional Hawaiian values, Alika bridges Indigenous knowledge with modern science to protect the reefs that sustain island life. 
We can’t wait to learn from Alika and are eager to see how he will help shape the direction of our organization!

As we welcome six new individuals to the CRC’s Advisory Board, we also say an immense THANK YOU to two members transitioning off.

To Dave Suggett and Ania Banaszak, your dedication and commitment to the CRC over the years has been awe inspiring to say the least.

Two of our longest serving members, who have been with us since the beginning. Each of you has worn many hats within the CRC- active members of the Advisory Board, Working Groups, AND Regional Groups. You have provided guidance and advice as we have grown, and helped shape the trajectory of our organization.

To Dave, we appreciate your steadfast resolve and commitment to always amplifying the science and work of practitioners around the globe. You have always been (and will continue to be) a critical thinker and expert we rely on for decisions big and small. You continually inspire us to push the envelope in coral restoration and make sure our science is heard.

To Ania, thank you for your honesty, transparency, and unwavering support over the years. You have helped us critically think about the CRC’s programs, strategic planning, and ways we can constantly improve. Your ability to take complex concepts and turn them into actionable items is something we admire.

This isn’t a goodbye, it’s a “we can’t wait to see what you do next!” That’s the special thing about the CRC, it’s a family that you have for life. One where we support each other no matter what.

Coral reef conservation has been selected as one of the key themes for the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Brazil (@cop30nobrasil)! Coral reefs occupy less than 1% of the total ocean area but support 25% of marine life. They feed communities, drive economies, protect coastlines, and could be the first ecosystem to face functional extinction if we don’t act.

Coastal communities have been connected to these reefs for centuries—their traditional knowledge and cultural heritage run through these waters. Losing reefs means losing cultural memory and identity.

Scientists agree: coral reefs are among the most threatened ecosystems globally. But they can recover when we reduce local AND global stressors. This isn’t just about saving corals. It’s about protecting marine biodiversity, coastal livelihoods, and the ecosystems we all depend on in the fight against climate change.

A few of our key takeaways from NYC Climate Week 🌊

🪸Corals need more space in the conversation. The practitioners, managers, community members, and scientists working around the clock to save reefs aren’t part of the agenda nearly enough. We need MORE coral restoration on the main stage!

🌎Our biggest problems are connected—so are the solutions. At the @sciencesummit, the @ipbes_ Nexus Assessment made this clear: climate, food, water, and health crises are interlinked. Solutions like habitat restoration work across all of them. They can be affordable, feasible, and effective. The science is there!

🌀But we’re stuck in silos. Why aren’t these obvious solutions scaling? We’ve divided nature into separate boxes, and it’s holding us back. Coral restoration isn’t just about corals—it protects coastlines, supports fisheries, drives tourism, and builds climate resilience. But we rarely fund or measure it that way.

💡 Key takeaway: The solutions exist. The data supports them. Now we need to break down the silos and invest in the people already doing the work.
